Zenon Group (before Superstructures) is demonstrating how collaboration with education providers can help address the construction industry’s skills shortage while developing future talent.
The construction industry continues to face significant challenges, including rising costs, material shortages, and an ongoing skills gap. However, Zenon Group (before Superstructures) has taken a proactive approach by building strong relationships with local education providers.
James Potter, Managing Director of Zenon Group (before Superstructures), has been working closely with One Sixth Form College in Ipswich through the New Anglia Enterprise Adviser Network. Initially joining in a voluntary capacity, he quickly recognised the opportunity to engage with and nurture emerging talent within the sector.
Through workshops, one-to-one engagement, and work experience placements, students have been introduced to the realities of structural engineering and encouraged to pursue careers in construction. This approach has already delivered tangible results, with several students progressing into degree apprenticeships within the business.
The company’s apprenticeship programme allows young professionals to gain hands-on experience while completing their academic studies, creating a mutually beneficial pathway for both employer and employee. Over time, this has enabled Zenon Group (before Superstructures) to develop a growing pool of skilled, motivated individuals who are actively contributing to the business.
Beyond recruitment, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to community engagement and long-term workforce development. By investing time in education partnerships, the company is not only helping to address its own recruitment needs but also contributing to the sustainability of the wider construction industry.
James emphasises that even small contributions such as mentoring, career talks, or offering work experience can have a significant impact. By strengthening the link between education and industry, businesses can help inspire the next generation while securing future growth.
